As I wrote this blog, there was a very short time left in 2024 when US citizens could vote for the leadership of our country. Were you worried about the election?
I was worried and scared, because the political issues seemed so drastically opposed to each other that it seemed the “wrong” vote would destroy our country.
But after reflecting on this and praying, I became encouraged to believe that our Holy God, who is omnipotent, omniscient, & omnipresent, is not and would not be defeated by a nation’s vote. However the vote turned out, God would work for good in our country and in our world. He knows what is best and his goal is salvation. Perhaps more people would be saved if the vote didn’t turn out the way I wanted. God is not responsible for wrong choices that people make, but God can turn disasters into good. Romans 8:28 says “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.”
What is “good” to God? Does that mean he will make the believers prosper financially? Not necessarily. When I look through the concordance, I see many references about ‘good.’
“God saw that the light was good,” (Gen.1:4). If Christians are given the incentive and courage to share the light of Christ, that is good. We are more willing to share with suffering people than with those who act like they don’t need anything.
God’s creation was good before sin entered the world. Someday He will renew and restore it. He created humans in His own image and that was good. (Gen. 1:26-31). God’s love is good; “His love toward Israel endures forever.” (Ezra 3:11) I believe He loves America, too.
God’s forgiveness is good: “You, Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in love to all who call to You” (Ps.86:5). People in distress are more likely to call to him. So if our country as we know it is destroyed, perhaps more people will call to him and be saved.
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.” (Mark 10:18). Jesus is God, so yes, He is good, and He died so we can be forgiven. Then He rose and is alive forevermore. So if God alone is good, He alone does the best good. He alone knows what is best for us and for our country.
The good news is that Jesus has come to be our Savior. (See Luke 2:10 and 4:18). We can have life in him. Jesus is our Messiah, come to rescue us from our sins. Maybe if our country keeps spiraling down into sin, more people will realize they need rescuing and call out to Him

P.S. Now that the election is over, I am relieved. But even if our new president doesn’t do as well as we hope and expect, our hope is in God who will work in whatever happens in America for the good of those who love him and obey him. Look at things from his perspective and spread his gospel.
