Questions of Grief

As I read the “after Easter” story again this year of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, I thought how many of us who have gone through grief because of the loss of a loved one can relate to those two. These thoughts developed into this poem.

Our Road to Emmaus

Walking away with hearts full of grief, focused on what we had lost,

talking of one who had captured our hearts willingly paying the cost,

we couldn’t reconcile all he had said with what had just now taken place.

Could God in heaven bring good out of this? Could this, in His hands, become grace?

.

As we walked along, another one joined, turning our thoughts to God’s Word.

“Didn’t you know that this is God’s plan? Trust him, gain peace from His Word.

I know you had hoped your dreams would come true, your loved one remain with you.

But death had to happen as part of God’s plan. Someday he’ll explain it to you.”

.

Jesus, please come and help us to know the things that are meant to be.

Help us believe you and help us receive the truths you want us to see.

Walking back home with hearts full of joy, we’ll focus on all Jesus taught,

Trusting that He is our Savior and Lord; we thank him for peace he has brought.

.
