It seems most people expect Christmas to be a joyous time, not “blue.” But for many, Christmas intensifies feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, and grief. I’ve had some “Blue Christmases,” but I’ve also experienced the great joy of knowing “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.” (This is one of my favorite memory verses, (John 1:14 RSV. My interest in memorizing scripture has always been fairly strong, but it has been increasing lately, bringing me much joy. The following is another wonderful scripture section.)
Galatians 4:4 says, “But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts crying, “Abba! Father!” (Gal. 4:4-6, RSV).
Think of it! God became human so he could redeem us, and then adopt us as his very own children! If we dwell on that “good news of great joy,” surely our Blue Christmas will contain some joy.
I invite you to go to my YouTube channel and hear a song called “In the Fullness of Time” based on Galatians 4:4-5: https://youtube.com/@judithvanderwege9055
Have a joyous Christmas!!
