We often see the phrase, “Wise men still seek him,” on Christmas cards. And I agree that the wisest thing a person can do is to seek to know our Savior, who was born in Bethlehem, and commit one’s life to him. I wonder how the wise men, who lived far east of Bethlehem in a pagan culture, knew to travel to Israel to look for him. Somehow they realised the star they saw was special–that it meant something important. In their research, they must have discovered the Hebrew writing in Numbers 24:17, where Balaam told Balak and his companions that he saw someone who would come out of Jacob to rule and defeat his enemies. The pagan Balaam had a vision of the coming Hebrew Messiah who would be victorious over all his foes. So when the wise men discovered this in their research, they decided to follow the star they saw in the sky and try to find this Messiah.
I wrote a song imagining the discussion of the wise men, which led to their decision to follow the star. You can hear it on my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@judithvanderwege9055 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gbCHh2MCa4
